Parallax is a very important supplier of controllers for robotics applications. Their propellor chip is rather unique, with its 8 parallel processors, running in parallel. Developing your own application does not need much insight in real time programming. There is even no need for an operating system. Various tasks like aquiring measured values, controlling, actuating and I/O are typically performed in individual processors.
