Many modern sensors today have integrated analog to digital conversion on board, which is a great advantage for robotic applications, as the AD conversion takes place as close as possible to the analog source in a bit resolution and -speed. Genereally, this fits best with the sensor properties. The digital signal is relatively insensitive to EMC interference, allowing longer distance with simple wiring. The interfacing with microcontrollers is generally simple, requiring little hardware and software.
